And I can honestly say that if I hadn’t found this solution… well I don’t know where I’d be now.

 

It took just one platform (a job marketplace) that, at first,  I completely blew off… to save me.

 

If you’re sitting at your computer, with access to the internet, I know it can save you too. And if you’re not quite to the level of desperation that I was at when finally buckling down and making this happen? That’s cool too. You can use this system to add an extra stream of revenue… on your own schedule, charging whatever you’d like, working from wherever you’d like, and all while being your own boss.

 

Just like I did.

So what was the little secret? Don’t laugh. It’s Upwork.

 

If you have heard of Upwork, you probably associate it with low paying jobs that are really hard to get, poor quality clients, and lots of overseas workers.

 

In a minute, I’m going to tell you why that’s all a pile of bologna and how I’ve actually had quite the opposite experience.

 

If you haven’t heard of Upwork, you’re in for a treat.

 

It’s the world’s largest freelance marketplace in the world. It’s where companies (big and small) from around the world post anything from one-time contract gigs to full-time, long-term work.

 

Every day, thousands of jobs are posted. There’s always a fresh batch, and you can have your pick. There’s so much activity on the platform that Upwork has already passed the $4 billion mark for money paid to freelancers.

 

The jobs are (mostly) all work-from-home, on your own schedule, at the rates you set.

You’re probably wondering… ok, what’s the catch?

 

There is none. Honestly. People need help doing any number of tasks and they’re willing to pay. Upwork is just one way that they find these people. 

 

There’s no catch. There is, however, competition.

 

Anyone can jump on, create a profile, and apply for jobs. But, I’ll be honest, most people don’t have much luck. It’s not because the jobs aren’t there, it’s because most people aren’t sure how to compete with the other freelancers.

 

When you learn how to compete on this platform, that’s when things really start to open up for you.

 

There are two primary ways to compete on the Upwork platform.

 

First, you can compete on price. I don’t suggest this.

 

Some people will take any job they can get, for any price someone will pay. This is what has given the site a bad name. 

 

But it isn’t the only way to get work on the platform.

 

In fact, I’ve found plenty of clients who are absolutely not looking for freelancers with the lowest rates. That brings me to the next way to compete on the platform… expertise.

That’s my preferred method. Competing based on expertise and not price has allowed me to find incredible clients, earn an extra $30,000.00 in income, and get my entire freelancing business going.

 

I don’t work for low rates, and I don’t work for poor quality clients. In fact, I’ve been able to work for some of the biggest names in my niche… and it would have never been possible if I didn’t utilize Upwork as one of my revenue streams.

 

The freedom has also allowed me to homeschool my son. Because I work on my own schedule and from wherever I want (the pool, the park, his music class… doesn’t matter), I have a lot of freedom. I use that freedom to hang with him and to build my business. 

 

And I should note, this business is the sole source of income for the family. I don’t rely on any traditional job at the moment (and hopefully won’t’ in the future). I say all this to let you know that the possibility here is huge. 

 

So what’s the key to finding success on the platform?

 

Treating the platform as an opportunity to find business, not employment.

 

This means competing based on expertise and not price, positioning yourself as an expert who can solve a specific problem for a client, and by establishing systems and processes that allow you to maximize the time spent on billable hours rather than chasing down clients.
